All About Slots
Slots are some of the most popular casino games in the UK and around the world, well-liked for their easy gameplay and potential for speedy payouts. At the heart of these slots is the concept of paylines - these are lines and patterns that span the width of each slot and are unique to every game. Players will stake their preferred amount and spin the reels to reveal a selection of symbols, all in random positions - but if matching symbols land across one of those aforementioned paylines, a payout will be awarded. Slots are as easy to play as that! Naturally, every game has its own special features to make gameplay interesting and unique, but those are the fundamentals you should know before playing.
History of Slots
Slots started out way back in the late 19th century with the invention of a unique machine inspired by poker that bears a striking resemblance to modern-day slots. With the pull of a lever, the machine would reveal a random selection of cards; the better the overall value of the ‘hand’, the better the prize! This was the most rudimentary form of slots, so there was no functionality for players to win actual cash payouts, so establishments could set their own rewards for a strong hand.
Charles Fey is famously known as the father of the slot machine because he took this interesting invention and fine-tuned it to create the Liberty Bell. In some ways, the Liberty Bell was simpler than the 1891 machine because there were fewer potential outcomes, but this made it easier to add an integrated payout mechanic. Little did Charles Fey know that this little tabletop machine would spawn an entire industry of increasingly complex games!
Types of Slots
Jumping way ahead from Charles Fey, you can now find a huge range of slots to cover most preferences and interests. Whether you fancy a spin through Ancient Egypt or want an enormity of winning ways to play through, modern-day slots are incredibly varied and are usually categorised by some of their most defining characteristics as briefly outlined below:
Jackpot Slots: If it’s the opportunity for big wins you want, these are the slots you will want to look into, particularly our range of Jackpot King titles which offer some of the biggest progressive jackpot prizes in the UK. Head over to our dedicated jackpot page to learn more.
Megaways Slots: While most slots are created with paylines in mind, these titles are built with enormous potential in mind. Many of these offer up to 117,649 ways to win, a huge upgrade from the traditional single-payline slots of yesteryear! Take a look at our Megaways page to find out more about this mechanic.
Mobile Slots: All of the slots available to play at Pink Casino are designed with mobile and tablet devices in mind, making us one of the biggest mobile slots venues around! Whether you want to play slots in your mobile browser or in our highly-rated casino app, you get to experience high-quality gameplay as a registered player.
Classic Slots: Classic slots are designed to closely replicate traditional land-based slot machines, perfect for players that enjoy that nostalgic feeling of a physical slot! Generally speaking, classic slots will look fairly simple with plenty of fruity symbols to squeeze potential wins out of, and you likely won’t see quite as many bonus features as you would in one of our video slots. These are still a hugely popular type of slot, so providers still create plenty of these with some nice modern touches to bring them into the 21st century.
Video Slots: Video slots are our bread and butter, expertly designed with gorgeous graphics, immersive bonus rounds, and a variety of themes & genres. Unlike classic games, video slots are intended to be as modern and innovative as possible so you can always discover all-new mechanics and features!
Common Slots Terminology
RTP/Return To Player: This is a percentage that indicates the expected amount that may be won by the player. For example, an RTP of 97% means that a player that bets £10 on a game could expect to win £9.70 - however, it’s possible to win more or less than this. Every game will have its own RTP as this is determined by the gaming provider and not the casino you’re playing at.
Stake: Your stake may also be referred to as your bet or your wager, and is the amount of money that you want to spend on each spin. It’s important to remember that this amount is deducted every time you spin the reels in slots (unless you’re in a free spins bonus round) and so it works differently to some other casino games that give you a number of gameplay rounds in exchange for your stake.
Spin: Each gameplay round in slots is referred to as a ‘spin’ because the reels will spin to reveal your randomly generated symbols! Some of the play buttons will actually say ‘spin’ for this reason, so it’s a term that is commonly used, particularly online.
Paylines: These are the horizontal lines and/or patterns that are formed across slots that matching symbols must land across in order to be eligible for a prize. The more paylines in a game, the more ways there are to win!
Reels: This term is used in a number of ways when it comes to slots. It may refer to the entire machine (e.g. ‘look out for wild symbols on the reels’) or just the vertical lines of the machine (e.g. ‘wild symbols may land in reels 2, 3, and 4’).
Wilds: Wild symbols are very common in video & mobile slots, and they can be incredibly useful in winning combinations. These will substitute for most other standard (i.e. non-bonus) symbols on the paytable, so a 3-of-a-kind combination would become 4-of-a-kind if a wild fell into the correct position.
Scatters: The exact ability of scatter symbols will depend on the specific game you’re playing as each title comes with its own rules. At their core, however, scatters will serve as bonus symbols, offering the ability to trigger a bonus feature when they land.
