Updated on 24th July 2020
While our online casino versions of the classic card game offer some great advantages including the ability to play for real cash prizes, join in with a live casino stream alongside other players and experienced croupiers, and make use of some fantastic modern features, there’s nothing quite like a bog-standard game of the 21 card game. Order in some food, invite a few pals over, and dust off your trusty pack of cards because we’re going to talk you through a beginner’s guide to the Blackjack card game, also known and referred to as 21.
The Basics of 21 Card Game
What’s the aim of the game in 21 card game?
The aim of the 21 card game is to get a hand that is valued closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand - without busting (going over 21). The simplicity is part of the appeal for many live casino players and is also applicable in the card version of the game - particularly when played in a non-gambling environment. Social games need to be easy to play and quick to pick up, and this is where 21 excels!
How do you place a bet in the 21 card game?
If you’re playing for money, you have the option of placing your bet before you turn your cards over to evaluate them or placing your bet after you’ve taken a look at the cards you’ve been dealt. There are a few different options available to you moving forward depending on how you wish to approach the game.
Choosing to ‘hit’ in 21 tells the dealer that you would like to be dealt another card. This is usually done when you have two low-value cards and think an extra card will take you to your goal of 21 - or so close that you don’t think the dealer could get any closer.
If you ‘stand’ during a game of 21 then this will tell the dealer you don’t want any more cards and would like to stick with the hand you have. This is usually done when your current hand is close enough to 21 that you think another card will bust you.
So, what does it mean to double down in a Blackjack card game? How do you double down? When should you double down?
Doubling down in the 21 card game means you double your initial bet in return for one extra card. You can’t choose to do this if you’ve already ‘hit’; you can only do this once the first two cards have been dealt. This is for when you’re really confident another card will take you closer to 21 than the dealer without busting you. Once the third card has been dealt you have no choice but to then stand as this is part of the terms of doubling down.
What does it mean to ‘split’ in 21 card game? Basically, if the first two cards that are dealt to you are of equal value (e.g. you receive two 8s) then you have the opportunity to ‘split’ this into two separate hands. This will cost the same as your original bet as you’re creating two bets - one for each of your hands. The dealer will separate them and deal both hands another card. The game will continue as normal.
How to Play 21 Card Game at Home
If you’re looking for something to do with friends on a weekend, invite them over, order in a takeaway, and deal out some cards. You can play without the gambling aspect when you’re home to make for a fun way to spend quality time with pals. Make it so that the overall winner (after a set number of rounds) doesn’t have to pay for the food, or gets to choose the movie, or simply gets the pride of knowing they’re the champ.
