Pride Month

June marks Pride Month: 30 glorious days dedicated to celebrating and uplifting our LGBTQ+ community. It’s a time for honouring different voices, recognising the journey toward equality, and showcasing the love, resilience and fierce creativity of the community.

Across the UK, Pride Month itself is packed with parades, performances, and people coming together to support, educate and - most importantly - celebrate! From small-town Pride parties to major city events, the entire country lights up with colour and joy.

Some of the key events to look out for in 2025 include:

  • Pride in London - 5th July
  • Pride Cymru - 21st to 22nd June
  • Dublin Pride - 28th June
  • Edinburgh Pride - 20th to 22nd June

The celebrations don’t just end in June, though. Up and down the country, you can still get your fill of fabulosity. Manchester Pride, for instance, is the high point of summer, with a full programme of events from the 15th to 25th August.

Whether you’re attending a local march or dancing under the rainbow in the capital, Pride is your chance to stand proud and support the LGBTQ+ community in all its fabulous forms.

How Did Pride Start?

Did you know that Pride didn’t start as a party but as a protest?

The movement we now know and love began in the early hours of 28th June 1969, at a small bar in New York’s Greenwich Village called the Stonewall Inn. After years of harassment and undignified raids on their safe spaces, the LGBTQ+ community had had enough. When the police raided the venue that night, the patrons fought back.

The protests that followed, known as the Stonewall Uprising, lit a spark that would grow into a global movement.

Exactly one year later, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to commemorate that moment of resistance. Inspired by that same spirit, the UK held its first Pride march on 1 July 1972, chosen to mark the anniversary of Stonewall. It wasn’t flashy or anything like the massive marches we have today, with just around 2000 people sashaying through London, but it was powerful.

From that moment on, the country’s Pride movement grew stronger. Throughout the 1990s and beyond, regional events and celebrations began to spring up across the country. Birmingham Pride launched in 1997 and Pride Cymru (formerly known as Cardiff’s Gay Mardi Gras) emerged in 1999.

Today, Pride is a global phenomenon, but it’s still rooted in activism as we tackle discrimination and help foster community-led change. Remember that behind every float, flag and dance anthem, there’s a long history of courage that’s made it all possible.

What to expect at Pride Event

First time heading to a Pride UK event this year? Get ready for a day (or weekend) like no other!

No matter which event you decide to go to, Pride is all about people coming together in celebration of diversity. Everyone’s welcome at Pride UK, much like they are here at Pink Casino. So, what do you need to know about attending an event?

At the heart of it all is the march. This is not just a colourful procession, but a living, breathing reminder of how far we've come and how far we still have to go to foster more inclusive communities. You'll see people of every background marching together in solidarity: from performers and activists to allies, artists and brands, all showing up to say everyone deserves to be seen, heard and celebrated.

Expect music in the air and energy on every corner. Pride line-ups often feature some of the best talent in the country, whether that’s drag royalty or iconic DJs. Meanwhile, dancers, performers and surprise guests will keep the party going long after sunset. Don’t be surprised if you come for the march and end up staying for the full-blown festival!

As for what to wear; while you don’t need to arrive covered head-to-toe in glitter, we’re always here for a bit of sparkle. Pick an outfit that makes you feel your best. Remember that all Pride events are judgement-free zones and authenticity is the only dress code.

Top Tips:

  • Plan ahead: timings can vary, especially with parade routes and stage performances, so get the info early (especially if you don’t want to miss out on seeing your favourite artists).
  • Know your toilets - this might seem trivial, but knowing where they are will save you from having to search through heaving crowds later.
  • Stay hydrated & fed: dancing all day takes fuel! There are usually loads of food stalls to choose from.
  • Be respectful: Pride is a safe space so look out for others, support each other and spread the love.

We're sorry!
